In 1969 he signed with the Denver Rockets (now Nuggets)on a three-year contract worth$450,000. His mother worked as a cotton picker since she was three years old, earning $2 per day. Spencer Haywood played in the NBA from 1969 to 1983. Due to the pressure of having 10 siblings and no income,Haywood was on the ropes.
