In 1969 he signed with the Denver Rockets (now Nuggets)on a three-year contract worth$450,000. His mother worked as a cotton picker since she was three years old, earning $2 per day. Spencer Haywood played in the NBA from 1969 to 1983. Due to the pressure of having 10 siblings and no income,Haywood was on the ropes. In the hostile South, Haywood soon realized that his life was not going to be like those of others in Silver Citybecause of his skin color. In 1975, the SuperSonics traded him to the New York Knicks where he later teamed with Bob McAdoo. On the basketball team there, he averaged 28.2 points and 22.1 rebounds per game during the 1967-68 season. One of the things that helped him develop his skills was working on his shot. Following this, Haywood and the SuperSonics reached an out-of-court settlement, allowing him to continue playing in the league.
